Thai Food
The major portion of Thai cuisine
is highly spiced and chili hot, thanks to the addition of chilies, large and
small,
some more potent than others. The burning sensation of Thai chilies has caused
much fanning of mouths by stunned foreigners on their first sampling, but
increased experience often brings enthusiastic approval,
as attested by the popularity of Thai restaurants today throughout the world.
Despite influence from Indian cuisine, Thai food is distinctive. The combination
of spices, herbs and fresh ingredients makes dining a special experience in
Thailand.
Thai meals are heavily based on rice accompanied by soup, curry and a number of
side dishes followed by dessert. Dessert would most likely consist of fresh
fruit (mangos, pineapples, coconuts, oranges, rose apples, durians, bananas,
papayas, longans, guavas or jackfruit). Thai food blends five major tastes:
sweet, sour, salty, bitter and hot. Common spices used are: coriander seed,
garlic, ginger, turmeric, lemon grass, cardamom, shallot, cumin, cinnamon,
pepper, green peppers, galangal, krachai, basil and chilies, and more. The hot
ingredients are chilies and pepper. Accompanying most meals are shrimp paste,
fish sauce (nam pla ) and tamarind sauce. Each cook will vary the formula
according to the location they come from. Most of the cooking is done in a wok
(Katha), a deep cone-shaped pan ; placed over gas or charcoal stove.
Thai food is lightly cooked and remains crunchy in order to keep it’s
nutritional value and original flavour. Little fat is used and meat does not
feature strongly. A Thai meal could therefore well be commended as a very
ancient from of “ nouvelle cuisine “ which one would never get fat on. ( from :

At the table, all dishes are served at the same time. The idea is to take a
spoonful of rice and top it with a spoonful of one of the dishes, the foods are
then eaten one by one in this combination.
Chopsticks are not used for eating Thai food. The correct method of eating is
with a spoon and a fork. The fork is held in the left hand and used to push the
food onto the spoon.
